Soul Purpose Retreat
CUBA | May 2-9, 2020
A cultural, yogi adventure
with Christine Chen & Will Schneider
Join us at Mhai Yoga, a beach town retreat center near Playa Megano and Playas del Este, 30 minutes from Havana. Discover a totally different experience for your practice in a place that calls yoga "green medicine" - a place where yoga is only allowed to exist as an alternative medicine.
We'll enjoy vegan, organic meals (not easy to do in Cuba) and have plenty of time for Havana day trips and cultural exploration. We will also practice with Eduardo Pimentel, the "godfather" of Cuban yoga (pictured below).

Prepare for the retreat
Prior to the retreat we will send out an email with all the information you will need. Below are some details to help you prepare for your time with us. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
LEGALLY ENTERING TO CUBA
We are travelling to Cuba with a General License in the ‘support for the Cuban people’ category.
As a part of our retreat we will be doing a yoga practice with Eduardo Pimentel. In addition to being an absolutely amazing opportunity, this also is how we are able to support the Cuban people. We will also be partaking in community tours, hikes, and other activities led by local Cuban residents. We will provide you with documentation to present at Customs on your way back to prove your travel was legal (should they ask. Sources say it’s 50/50, but you should be prepared).
CUBAN TOURIST CARD
Airlines should provide you with the necessary Cuban tourist card before you embark (double-check when booking). Prices range from US$50 to US$100 depending on which airline you fly with.
BOOKING A FLIGHT
We will fly into Jose Marti International Havana Airport (HAV). Typically we don't book flights until we have at least 10 people attending/paid. We like to have a majority of people fly out and travel together to ease tensions and to simplify transportation to/from the airport. If you would like to travel solo, please book a flight that arrives no later than 2:00pm on 5/2/2020 and departs no earlier than 12pm on 5/9/2020. Let us know when you’ve booked your flight so we can confirm Airport Transportation with Mhai Yoga.
If you are an American citizen, it is requested that you arrive with the cash you will need for the trip as you are currently UNABLE to withdraw money with American credit or debit cards. You can use USD or Euros to pay for activities at the Mhai Yoga Retreat Center, where we will be, however, if you visit outside of Mhai you will need to exchange for CUC. There is a fee for exchanging in Cuba, so decide when and how much you will exchange.
Lonely Planet has great information about traveling to Cuba, which can be found here.
Is this retreat appropriate for beginners? How advanced does my yoga practice need to be for this retreat?
Answer: Everyone is welcome, even if you’ve never practiced yoga! All of our yoga sessions will be fun, somewhat challenging, but accessible to students of all levels, from newbies to advanced.
Which activities are mandatory?
Answer: This retreat is all yours. Our mission is to create a space to tap into all the things you might want by providing you opportunities to explore and connect with:
nature (hiking, pool time, swimming, sunbathing, etc.),
yourself (yoga, meditation, workshops, journaling, etc.),
and others (group meals, excursions, activities, etc).
We do have activities planned each day and ALL of them are optional. Absolutely nothing is mandatory, but we encourage you to participate as often as you feel comfortable. Our experience has been that the greater the group participation, the greater and more satisfying the experience is for everyone
If I’ve booked a shared/double room and am travelling solo, how will I be paired with a roommate?
Answer: Great question. We pair people based on a couple things:
Gender: In general, we room people of the same gender together. In the event we have an odd number, we will ask a few people if they are comfortable rooming with someone of a different gender.
Vibe: We know almost every student attending these retreats, so when matching roommates we trust our instincts and knowledge of our students in selecting who will room with whom.
We have never encountered an issue with roommates, and it is one of our goals to keep an open and accepting environment at all times. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Will there be WiFi at the resort?
Answer: Yes, there will be WiFi, but we don't know how reliable it is. We would like to encourage you to adhere to a week long "digital detox," i.e., use your technology as little as possible. If you need to check-in with loved ones or work etc, please keep it to a minimum. We ask that when you do pick up your phone, please respect the rest of the group and use it in a private space.
Do you have a payment plan?
Answer: Yes! After the $500 Deposit we can split your final payments. All payments are due by December 1st, 2019. If you pay in full before October 31st, 2019, you will qualify for an Early Bird discount! Please reach out if you are interested in a payment plan.
What should I pack?
Answer: Mhai Yoga has an interesting (and must-read!) list of the Top Ten Things to Pack for Cuba. In addition to that, we’d recommend the basics:
For Yoga and Workshops:
Clothes to practice in (yoga mats and props are provided!)
By the Pool/At the Beach:
Hat with good sun coverage
A good book
Shoes for by the pool
On a Hike/Community Tour:
Shoes for hiking
Clothes to wear on a hike
Reusable water bottle
Clothes to lounge around in
Clothes for trips to Havana
Tylenol (not available in Cuba)
